At Emery & Emery DDS, we have been practicing dentistry for over 30 years and we have always been interested in the latest technology to support the health and comfort of our patients. We continue to focus our efforts on continuing education and embracing new technology with our latest CAD-CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) crown procedures.
A dental crown — a tooth-shaped cap placed over a tooth to restore its shape and strength — usually requires an uncomfortable mouthful of impressions, a temporary replacement worn for a few weeks until the final crown is ready and multiple visits to the dental office. At Emery & Emery DDS, we have embraced new CAD-CAM technology to recreate teeth or fillings in just a few hours instead of several weeks. The best news is that the cost to patients for this same-day dentistry is generally the same as a crown done the conventional way.
We have been using the CAD-CAM crown procedure for about a year in our practice and we are very happy with the improved service it provides our patients. During the CAD-CAM crown procedure, instead of taking physical impressions, we use optical or laser scanning technology to capture a digital image of the tooth from all angles. Then we use a special 3D software to design the crown and send it directly to our in-office mill to form the porcelain tooth.
CAD-CAM dentistry is just taking off right now, even though the equipment has been available for more than 25 years. It is going to be the future of dentistry. Even labs are building crowns digitally.
